The Good Christmas Tree – loop your toy

This year's Christmas presents may already be in another child's room

Almost 100,000 children in Norway grow up in families with persistent low income. You know many of them, and you know how much a present under the tree means. At the same time, over 200 million toys lie untouched in Norwegian homes on an ordinary day.

You don't need to collect anything. Tell the families you work with about the tree, or get in touch with us.

What the tree can look like with wishes and gifts

The Good Christmas Tree connects children who are wishing for something this Christmas with toys lying untouched in other people's homes. Children and families post their Christmas wishes, and people all over the country grant them with a toy they already have. Everything happens online, the giver pays the shipping, and the gift is sent safely with Helthjem. The tree is not meant to replace the fantastic work you do, but to give families one more option.

We know it is usually new toys and money you ask for at Christmas. But we believe it can also mean something special to receive a toy that has been on adventures before – a toy with a story.

The tree is open to everyone. All it takes is for a parent or guardian to sign up with an email and add a delivery address, so the gift can be sent. But we want it to reach those who need it most, so we are asking for your help to spread the word about this opportunity:

  • Tell the families you work with about The Good Christmas Tree.
  • Would you like to post wishes on behalf of children, for example children without an adult who can do it for them? Get in touch, and we will set this up for you in a simple way.
  • It costs you nothing but sharing it on your own channels.

We cannot promise that every wish will be granted, but we do our best.

What you need to know

  • The gifts given through Loopyty are pre-loved toys. Everyone who takes part needs to know what to expect. A gift must be in the condition Never played, Flawless or Pre-loved. But it is not new – it comes from another child and another home.
    • Never played
Straight from the box. Nobody has played with it yet.Can be a Christmas present
    • Flawless
Played with, but without a single scratch. Can be a Christmas present
    • Pre-loved
Has been on adventures and shows it a little, but everything works. Can be a Christmas present
    • Wise
Has lived a long life, and it shows. Not under the tree
    • Fixer-upper
Needs a screwdriver and a little love before it is ready. Not under the tree
  • Loopyty does not grant the wishes. Other families and people who use the platform do. We run the tree, take the shipping payment from the person giving and send the gift with Helthjem, and we keep the wishes anonymous. Givers find a match with something they have at home, or place a toy under the tree for someone to choose.
  • The gifts are wrapped like Christmas presents. Givers are encouraged to wrap the toy, so it arrives as a real Christmas present.
  • We cannot promise that every wish will be granted. But we do our best to make sure as many children as possible get a present. And the more people who hear about the tree, the more wishes can be granted.
  • The tree opens on 1 November. Wishes can be granted until 23 December. If a wish is granted by 15 December, the gift has plenty of time to arrive before Christmas Eve.

How it works

You can give in two ways, and you can write your own Christmas wish. Every gift is a toy that has belonged to someone before.

Grant a wish

Find a wish on the tree and see what the child is dreaming of. Have you got a toy that fits, or something along the same lines? Tap ‘I have this’, choose the toy and pay the shipping. The family is told the wish has been granted, and you find the Helthjem code under Orders.

Place a gift under the tree

Got a toy you've outgrown that still has adventures in it? Choose the toy, put it under the tree and pay the shipping. When someone chooses the gift, you find the Helthjem code under Orders and send it wrapped. If nobody chooses it by 23 December, you get the shipping back (minus the payment fee).

Write a wish

Is your child wishing for something, and are you happy for it to have been loved before? Write the wish, and it stays on the tree until someone finds it. If someone has the toy, they can grant the wish, and you are told when it has been granted. You can write up to three wishes for each child, but sadly we can't promise every wish will be granted.

A gift must be in the condition Never played, Flawless or Pre-loved.

Safe and anonymous

On the tree, every wish looks the same, whoever is behind it. Posting a wish should feel just as natural for everyone.

  • Names are never shown on the tree. Only the wish, and a picture of the toy if there is one
  • Whoever grants the wish learns only the child's first name, so they can write a gift tag
  • The address is used only by Helthjem. The giver never sees it
  • There are no messages between users on Loopyty, for children or adults
  • Families never have to say why they are wishing for something
